It’s impossible to sum up Sparks in just a short paragraph, because they’ve donned so many musical personas across their almost six-decade (yes, six!) career as a duo. The American art-pop brothers — Ron and Russell Mael — have achieved a kind of longevity normally reserved for the likes of bands such as the Stones, but with a far more adventurous and off-kilter slant: theatrical, trying on the costumes of other sounds, never making the same song twice. They’ve pinballed from 1970s glam rock to 1980s synth pop and disco, new wave and electronic opera, and continue to defy both genre and convention: their 28th album MAD!, released last May, reached No.2 and became the highest charting album of their career so far.
