“I love doing things the wrong way,” says Lael Neale. “It’s so rare that we get to do that in life.” The sometimes LA, often Virginia-based singer makes minimalist drone pop that pinballs between rural solitude and urban chaos, as on last year’s album Altogether Stranger, using an Omnichord (electronic autoharp) and a taste for minute rebellion (“like refusing to follow a recipe”) to craft her high-lonesome sound.
