Last year, Polly Louise Mackey — aka Art School Girlfriend — decided she would stop releasing music altogether. The Welsh musician, producer, DJ, and lecturer (and former Deaf Club shoegazer) instead went into the studio to focus on process over outcome, and lo and behold: taking the pressure off resulted in an intense stream of existential creativity and she emerged with a third album Lean In, released this March. A Green Man regular, Mackey’s live band includes her wife, Marika Hackman, but sadly probably not her whippet, Captain.
