If folk and lo-fi punk share any kind of resemblance—strained balladry, a DIY ethos and bewildering sparse arrangements—then an act like Pollyfromthedirt, fluent in both mocking dry wit and heavier techniques, is perfectly poised to disrupt them. His playfully defiant name thumbs its nose at the local archetype of a true northerner. The now London-based artist's new single highlights his stranger, slightly more pixelated depiction of blighty.
It all started after his dad got rid of his PlayStation and the masked artist picked up a guitar instead. Now he’s considered a favourite amongst a new generation of tastemakers. His first EP The Dirt Tape P1 featured previously released tracks "Cherry Seeds", "Darlos Cowboys", and "A Weekend in Majorca", cemented him as one of the most intriguing new voices to emerge from England's suburbs.
Since his first release, his cult status has bloomed, earning him praise from The Observer’s One To Watch column, The Guardian, Pigeons & Planes, The Face, NME, hidden.ny, Notion, Clash, The Line Of Best Fit, Wonderland, Indie Hourz, Far Out Mag, BBC 6 Music, and more.
Pollyfromthedirt sounds entirely at home in his contradictions: a collection of sounds from an artist who left the dirt, but still likes to track it around everywhere he goes. Upcoming live dates below.
