Florence Shaw employs a very intentional “politely bored” drawl, part of the idiosyncratic band she fronts, south London’s Dry Cleaning. Shaw is more spoken-word artist than singer, cataloguing slogans, scraps of conversation, online comments, and the kind of nonsensical phrases you might hear someone mumble in their sleep. That’s in contrast to the rest of the band, who are mercurial and angular — never more so than on their third album, Secret Love, released at the very start of the year.
