The Liminanas

‘Making new things out of old things is an act of alchemy,’ say French duo The Limiñanas. Their ingredients: yé-yé pop, Italian film soundtracks, new wave, blues, and psychedelia. Their recipe: analogue production and a swirl of influences that are obviously cool – Suicide, The Cramps, Serge Gainsbourg - but never ersatz. The married couple made their eponymous debut in 2010. Five albums on, their recent release, Shadow People, features New Order bassist Peter Hook and Anton Newcombe of The Brian Jonestown Massacre. It’s dark narcotic pop, with low vocals, windswept licks, and ominous drums: a tempestuous affair. Or as Paste Magazine puts it, ‘the aural equivalent of a shapely cloud of cigarette smoke hanging elegantly in a ray of light… with sunglasses on.’
