When four friends go to jazz school and decide to make music together, they’re probably going to start a jazz band, right? Wrong! The Beths, formed in New Zealand in 2015, are firmly attached to their guitars. Frontman Elizabeth Stoke quit her day job teaching trumpet to take the pop-punk band on the road, after 2018 debut album Future Me Hates Me won affection at home and stateside. Using tightly crafted melodies and barbershop backing vocals, the record’s high energy and hyperbolic pep mask frank lyrics about futile crushes and shunned love. Fans of Rilo Kiley, Camera Obscura, and Best Coast should prick up their ears, but The Beths’ sunny despondency speaks to everyone. You’ll be humming their songs all weekend.
