Sudan Archives, aka Brittney Parks, has a pet snake called Goldie. The ball python doesn’t get to perform with her, but he does represent a visual theme of her music: being misunderstood because of the way you look. The African-American self-taught violinist and singer plays with the idea of identity through genre, too: on debut record Athena you’ll hear Sudanese fiddle, glossy US R&B, Irish jigs, and industrial electronica. Less bookish, more bouncy than the name might suggest, Sudan Archives belongs to the world of Solange and FKA twigs, but really she’s almost otherworldly: a goddess with a gold snake by her side.
