Buxton Palace Hotel is the place to stay should you seek the faded grandeur and leatherette café booths of a Richard Hawley record. It’s also the title of Sheffield musician James Leesley’s debut EP as Studio Electrophonique. Home-recorded on a 4-track cassette recorder, the EP retains all the warmth, instinct and unreliability of the tape format. Signed to Violette Records, the Liverpool/Manchester/Paris label, Studio Electrophonique earns French appeal not just because of the francophone name, but because of Leesley’s retro, cinematic sound, like a ‘dilapidated funfair waltz’. We can’t wait for the Studio Electrophonique funfair to come around to Green Man.
