Solarphones is a sound installation of unique solar-powered acoustic instruments. Inside each instrument a chaotic mechanical system plucks guitar strings at random, creating organic melodies that respond to the amount of sunlight received. Designed to connect directly with the environment in the present moment - there is no capacity to store energy and no batteries are used - they only sound when there is sufficient light. Solarphones will be suspended from trees around the garden, creating melodies from the sun’s energy over the course of the festival. Devised by Chris Ruffoni in West Yorkshire. Chris is inspired by connecting with nature whilst walking in the moors near his home, and manifests in work that is aleatoric and organic, patterned but chaotic, responsive but uncontrollable.
