Minyo Crusaders

‘Songs of the people’: min’yo — spirited, historic Japanese folk songs — originally belonged to the country’s workers, passed down by fisherman, farmers, and sumo wrestlers since the 14th century, before being kidnapped by the highbrow art world. Enterprising Japanese 10-piece band the Minyo Crusaders have set out to return min’yo to the people, reworking and energising the songs for a modern audience, introducing aspects of cumbia, Ethiopian jazz, thai pop, afro funk, and reggae.
