Out with the whimsical, in with the bold. Marika Hackman first hit us with her soft and skilled dose of folk, but that’s since given way to something far more brazen. Her sophomore record, 2017’s I’m Not Your Man, rose out of female singer-songwriter traditions to provide a vitally unflinching gaze on female sexuality and empowerment. The shift was prompted by Hackman’s desire ‘to stop talking about water, lakes and trees when I just wanna write about the fact that I’ve broken up with my girlfriend’. A third album in the pipeline promises an unashamedly big pop sound: Marika Hackman wants it darker, but dancier, and we’re so ready.
