They’ve played circuses in New Orleans, concert halls in Ireland, and pirate ships in Amsterdam: and pretty soon they’ll be able to add the green hills of Wales to the list. Mama’s Broke forge a soundscape that’s at once both familiar and darkly uncanny. The Canadian duo, formed in 2014, dance between fiddle, guitar, banjo, and mandolin, pulling from the raw heart of traditional folk – including Quebecois and Celtic – as well as blues, punk, and doom metal. With two European and several north American tours under their belt, Mama’s Broke truly recognise the transience of folk music. Their songs are travelling vessels, shaped by their time on the road.
