Loraine James grew up on Enfield’s infamous Alma Estate, learned piano as a teenager, and taught herself electronic music production at home. Her ever-curious ears took in everything from emo to math rock, R&B to drill to ambient: an eclectic listening habit that has shaped her music since her self-released debut album Detail in 2017. Her latest album, Gentle Confrontation came out last year. A queer, black artist in a white male dominated genre, she makes intuitive, improvised work of high emotion and a distinctive DIY spirit.
