John Francis Flynn

John Francis Flynn

He calls himself “a singer of songs, player of windy instruments”, but Ireland’s John Francis Flynn might be underselling himself a little there. A member of Dublin trad group Skipper’s Alley, the folk singer and multi-instrumentalist struck out on his own last year with his debut solo album I Would Not Live Always. Alongside traditional instruments — tin whistles, flute, fiddle, a voice “like old leather” — he employed Tascam four-track cassette-tape loops and drew on the influence of jazz, electronic, and rock music, to create a uniquely stunning folk record.
