Glockenspiels should happen more often in pop. Luckily, Hen Ogledd are on hand – though the glockenspiel is just one part of their flourishing ecosystem of sound, which also features guitars, gongs, synths, saxophones, and, er, crisp packets. Since 2012, the prog-folk pop act has combined an openness to trying new things with a zany index of inspiration (anything from twelfth century mystics to modern art). Their 2020 album Free Humans took on the climate crisis, armed with optimism, unity, and a song for the Loch Ness Monster – though it’s their song for a 9ft tall giant that might catch the ears of the Green Man…
