Emma-Jean Thackray is not to be trifled with. Composer, producer, DJ, singer, bandleader, self-taught multi-instrumentalist (trumpet, flugelhorn, cornet, trombone, guitar, bass, drums, congas, djembes, shakers, vibraphone, and keys, if you’re curious), on her 2018 album Ley Lines she played every instrument (even the clarinet, which she’d learned for five minutes beforehand), sang every part, recorded, and mixed the entire record by herself. ‘I like music that makes me think and I like music that makes me dance,’ she says. So do we! Emma-Jean describes her shows as ‘Big beats, big tunes, weird shit, loud stuff, quiet stuff, open hearts and closed fists...’ You’d be foolish to miss out.
