Rather than be dubbed ‘genre-defying’, Eli Smart simply invented his own genre: ‘aloha soul’. The Hawaiian musician deals in breezy guitar pop, speckled with soul, tropicana, and sixties surf. Melody-making is in his blood, after all: his parents are jazz musicians, and his grandmother opened for Jimi Hendrix as part of sixties all-girl rock group Ace Of Cup. Eli swapped Hawaiian heat for the Mersey beat to indulge his deep love for The Beatles, before heading to London, where his 2021 EP Boonie Town has earned endorsement from the likes of Elton John. His no boundaries approach to music and balmy attitude are guaranteed to bring some sunshine our way this summer, no matter the Welsh weather forecast.
