Eels' frontman Mark Everett, better known as E, cites Roger Miller's adage 'you can't roller skate in a buffalo herd' as a kind of guiding light. Beloved for their outsider’s gaze, the band’s comic take on heartbreak always comes with an element of gravitas. Since 1996 debut Beautiful Freak, Eels' history has been long and zany: appearances in Wim Wenders films and children’s animations, a Brit award, a tour with Pulp, a Royal Albert Hall show, and a BAFTA-award winning documentary exploring the work of E’s quantum physicist father. Eels’ recent album, The Deconstruction, advocates a degree of kindness and hope for our current times: songs like Sweet Scorched Earth pit tender romance against environmental tragedy. Though there probably won't be any buffalo herds at this year's Green Man, just remember, you can't roller skate in one... but you can be happy if you've a mind to.
