Sex and death done with beauty and acerbic wit: Arab Strap, with their sung-spoken Scottish brogue, sparse guitar and locked-in beats, and frank, lewd narratives — or “fly on the duvet vignettes” — were a defining part of the 1990s and 2000s Glasgow music scene. They emerged alongside artists such as Belle & Sebastian and Mogwai, and in turn influenced a newer cohort including Frightened Rabbit and the Twilight Sad. The revered duo — Aidan Moffat and Malcolm Middleton — formed in 1995 and called it a day in 2006, before reforming in 2016 and releasing a new album, As Days Get Dark, last year. What a joy it is to welcome them to our mountains this summer.
