Midwesterner Anna St Louis roamed to California five years ago, bringing the plaintive spirit of her Kansan homeland to the pastel expanse of the west. Early collections DEMOS (2015) and First Songs (2017) see St Louis reaching out for a shape. Her 2018 debut album, If Only There Was A River, transforms those country, soul, and folk experiments into a mystical and resonant record of longing. Elements of Loretta Lynn, John Fahey, and Townes Van Zandt bear witness to an artist crafting her own sound, one that’s both austere and restless. For Kevin Morby, who produced the album, St Louis’ music reminds us ‘that the world is full of magic at every turn, if only we let ourselves see it’.
