‘I wanted songs that spilt out of themselves,’ says Alex Neilson of his solo alter-ego’s venture Alex Rex. ‘The records I cherish most are asymmetrical things, full of blemishes’. The Leeds-born drummer, perhaps best known as songwriter and vocalist in lionised Scottish folk-rock act Trembling Bells, released his debut solo album Vermillion in 2017. As Alex Rex he straddles the line between personal discomfort and pop rapture, Vermillion a riot of rose-red horror, voodoo, lust, upbeat Hammond organs and doomy folk chants. Imminent second album Otterburn, however, is contoured by the sorrow of an unexpected family bereavement. Something epic and intimate this way comes.
