So........... There's one day left to vote!!!!! Who has everybody gone for? Sen Segur were my faves but don't look anywhere in the running. Hunting bears are good, as are Marthas and arthurs.
Veritable shit-storm broken out on the facebook page - apparently the Goan Dogs who were high up in the ratings have been chucked out for alleged dodginess and their fans are rather upset. The whole thing seems very flawed and I wonder if this might be the poll's last year?
whoa whoa whoa Kras jumping on the bandwagon :)) I for one (and lots of others) certainly hope it won't be the last! I've enjoyed it lots this year and every year when i look at it. It has given us some really good openers for the festival and i've enjoyed trawling through the bands. I've pointed my friends in the direction of the competition too as it enables bands to get on a good festi line up through uncoventional means..............
some good bands in the final this year too although my faves sen segur and goonies (can't remember the rest) didn't make it. i'm rooting for hunting bears now :))
But surely if we are voting on who should open our festival,it shoud only be ticketholders who vote and it would be nice if we had the final in the north for a change or wales
Yes, what BPH said. Over 20,000 votes cast apparently, but neither my wife nor I voted (due mainly to the daft Facebook app). Its seems a bit strange that (at least) 5,000 people who wont be going can help select the opening act. {Edited to remove earlier nonsensical statement!}
Lets face it, the winners will be whoever Huw Stephens champions anyway - he's been able to choose his 10 favourites, and will select the winner (if I'm not wrong?) Not really vox populi is it.
I think loads of festivals are running these things now, and its the basically the same format - public vote (well, get your mates to vote), live play-off, judges decide, winner gets meaningless 25-minute stint on the Not-Yet-Good-Enough Stage whilst early doors punters are still pitching their tents and downing their first Scrumpy Jack of the weekend. To say they had over 500 entries, doesn't really mean anything (other than their marketing was great!). Most of these bands will be entering every competition going.
I understand that any exposure is good exposure, and unknown bands need a break, but this just seemed like a free-for-all. The Wicker Man Festival in Galloway runs a similar competition to open the main stage, but its for local bands and artists only. I would have been much more inclined to listen and vote (and watch on the day) if the pool had been limited to Welsh bands, or local acts.
what annoyed me most this year was the fact that bands who have gone on tour with the likes of Girls Aloud were entering and winning, bringing facebook into it took things away from this website and it was anything goes. Seems like this rubbed a few people up the wrong way and also ive noticed theere has been a few breach of rules, surley a lesson learned this year. piss off Zuckerberg.
I think the regulars on here should have a say in deciding who wins - based on key factors such as the wearing of cardigans, the use of bongos, the level of psychedelia, the tweeness rating and so on.
If the bands with the voided votes had nothing to do with it, then they do have my sympathy as they must have been gutted to be told they'd got through, then hours later that they hadn't. I know they will have worked quite hard, but presumably those with more "valid" votes had worked hard too. I'd be interested to know more about the scandal!
Regarding other points, I do agree that it would be more appropriate for the votes to be cast by the ticket-holders only. It also should not include signed bands (like last years winners).
The whole system doesn't really work because it's just down to who has the most mates. I entered myself, really just to see if I could get a few more listens, as I don't see how a solo-act could possibly ever get through. I'd already bought my ticket anyway, 6th year at GM for me.
why should anyone have to work hard for votes? it should be upload a video, and whoever likes it vote, there should be no other way about it. keep it to this website, yeah and i think the unsigned part should be kept true aswell. isnt Zuckerberg the facebook guy?
Well I think there are some very sensible suggestions on here as to how to proceed in future, not least from Krasnyi - well said sir, although I think quantity and quality of beards should also be factored in.
There's no point in having a "who's got the most virtual firends" competition (unless that's actually what you want to discover I suppose).
Restrict the votes to ticket-holders (why should people who aren't coming have a say in this? It's pointless), conduct the poll through this website and have someone connected with the festival decide on a list of bands to choose from.
It's all too battle of the bands for me. It should not be he who has the most virtual friends wins. I agree with a person above. It should be down to ticket holders, they are the ones who will be watching and have paid for the festival. This needs be sorted out for next year, we want to play, we have loads of interest from agents, we're doing some big support slots this year but we don't have 1000's of virtual friends, come on GM. x

Also what bph said - that's what I meant by flawed. It seems to be an exercise in mobilisation rather than a geniune popularity contest.
