Haha, a regular conversation topic in our family. To be honest I do quite like him but I prefer to take the piss, mostly out of his voice. Seems to be getting people interested in science without dumbing down much and I don't see that that's a bad thing.
He lives just up the road from me, although he seems to spend most of his time galavanting around the world. I couldn't possibly comment on anything else, with him being a neighbour and that
I saw him at Glastonbury arguing with Billy Bragg about science and religion. Billys a bit of a hero of mine but his thinking was just so lazy, suggesting science was a belief system similar to religion. Brian Cox set him straight - Respect!
So, yes he is smug, yes annoying voice, but talks sense.
....My 14 year old son cant stand him either though!
